Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, New Castle, New Hampshire

New Hampshire may have a short coastline, but it boasts an historic lighthouse. the Portsmouth Harbor Light was one of a handful of pre-Revolutionary Way lighthouses with a station being constructed in 1771. The light underwent a few reconstructions and changes in location before the the current tower was built in 1878 on the same foundation as an 1804 tower.
From this picture you can see how short the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse is
The lighthouse is only 48 feet high. Older towers were 80 feet high, but when Whaleback Lighthouse was built in 1820, the light at Portsmouth didn't need the additional height.
The Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse is still an active beacon, helping ships navigate into Portsmouth Harbor, and is run and maintained by the Coast Guard. However, Whaleback Light has been owned by the Friends of the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses since 2008.
