Ukulele Festival, Waikiki, Hawaii

This past weekend was the 48th annual Ukulele Festival at Waikiki's Kapiolani Park.

Ukulele players, bands and school groups from all over the world participate. We saw players from Japan, a large orchestra of kids of from New Zealand, and, of course, bands from Hawaii.

The park was packed with people for this free all-day event and no one seemed to mind the passing showers. There was also a row of tents with vendors. I couldn't believe how many folks make and sell high quality ukuleles. There was also a tent where you could get a ukulele lesson.
The highlight was a band called Beat-lele a group who performs Beatle songs on ukulele. That might sound like an odd fusion, but it was a lot of fun and these guys are excellent musicians who capture the fine details of the Fab's work. They started their set accompanied by an orchestra of over 300 ukulele players strumming along with them and then played a set of Beatles' tunes by themselves as a foursome.
