Fourteen Foot Bank Lighthouse, Delaware Bay
Eleven miles from Bowers Beach, Delaware, the Fourteen Foot Bank Lighthouse is not visible from shore. The only way to see it by boat. If you don't have access to a boat, you can take a lighthouse tour of the bay that departs from Cape May, NJ.
Perhaps because of its isolation in the bay, the lighthouse has a colorful history. One keeper was stranded at the lighthouse for three months due to a particularly cold winter when ice floes prevented ships from bringing visitors or supplies. Another keeper committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid after breaking his ankle and not being able to receive medical attention for two weeks.
Michael Gabriel bought the lighthouse in 2007 and has talked about starting a microbrewery there, but so far he just uses it as a summer getaway.
