Ljubljana Castle

In some ways the castle in Ljubljana, Slovenia is like hundreds of others across Europe. It was originally a medieval castle that was rebuilt in the 15th century with most of the structures dating from the Renaissance.
But, the castle also has an unusual history. After it was no longer needed as fortification for the city, it fell into disrepair. It was later used as a prison in the 19th century.

Then, in the 20th century, plans were drawn up for it to be a museum, but those were never carried out. Instead, the castle was used to house poor people.

Today, the castle is a popular place for exhibitions and events. People often get married here, as one couple did on the day we visited.
Because of all the building that was done over time, the castle has a bit of a "House that Jack Built" style to it. Especially out of place is the Soviet era building.

But, if you take the funicular from the town below to the castle, you'll get a great view of Ljubljana and the nearby mountains.
