On the way to Mt. Etna, Sicily

Mount Etna looms large in the landscape, history, and psyche of Sicily. Its most significant eruption might have been in 1669 which destroyed ten villages and the lave flow nearly reached Catania. Geologists have hypothesized that the 1669 eruption may have contributed to the 1693 earthquake that leveled much of eastern Sicily, including Catania.

The balcony of our hotel had a great view of Etna.

We hired a car to see Mt. Etna, but you can also take a tour bus.

The area around Mt. Etna is prime agricultural land. In fact, wine from this region is beginning to be recognized internationally.
The most charming part of the drive was when we saw a farmer herding his goats from one field to another.
