Moonshine in Croatia

A restaurant in Rovinj, Croatia, 2011

In Istria, if you're in a family-run restaurant, they might place a bottle or two on the table at the end of the meal.

Rakija, the most popular spirit in Croatia, is a kind of moonshine made with fruit or herbs.  There are hundreds of different kinds of Rakija, but the most popular in Istria is plum.

Much of the Rakija consumed in Croatia is homemade, as was the case in the bottle on the left in the photo.  Notice the lack of a label on the bottle.

In my novel Truffle Hunt, lots and lots of Rakija is consumed.

Zivjeli!
