Bodie Island Lighthouse, Outer Banks, North Carolina

There are many kinds and styles of lighthouses. Sparkplug, harbor lights, range lights, brick ledge lights and modern beacons. But, when you think of lighthouses, you probably envision the tall, imposing tower style lights.
Bodie Island is one of these tower lights, and the last of a handful left. It's a giant, standing over 150 feel tall. It needs to be that tall to warn ships of dangerous shoals and lead them to the nearby Oregon inlet. The area is so dangerous, in fact, that it is nicknamed the "Graveyard of the Atlantic."

The lighthouse was restored and opened to the public in 2013 and you can now climb the tall tower.
