Lecce Castle, Lecce, Italy

Lecce Castle, also known as the Castle of Charles V, was built in the 12th century. You can tell it is Norman and not Baroque because of the its stern and boxy design.
This castle was, of course, used to defend the city. At one time it had a moat around it with, legend has it, a white bear for protection.

Today, the castle is a cultural center. You can wander around the grounds of the castle. There might be exhibits of artwork on display, as there were on the day we visited.
And maybe if you're good, after your visit, mom will buy you a gelato.
