Sandy Beach, South Shore, Oahu, Hawaii
Sandy Beach, sometimes called "Sandy's" by locals, is on the South Shore of Oahu between Hanauma Bay and Makapu'u.
The beach is incredibly popular with bodysurfers and bodyboarders because of the breaks that come in close to shore making for excellent conditions.
However, Sandy Beach is also very dangerous. Signs are posted warning of strong rip currents and the beach is the location where the most injuries occur every year in Hawaii. Thus, the beach's nickname "break-neck" beach.
The beach is very busy with trucks selling shave ice and other treats, weed dealers blasting reggae music from their trucks, and kite flyers launching their kites on weekends.
If you want a little peace and quiet, head west on the beach. Just a short walk away you'll see barely another soul. We saw a monk seal perfectly content to sun himself on the beach.
In 2008, Barack Obama, on a break from the campaign, bodysurfed at Sandy Beach. It was said to be a favorite spot of his when we was growing up. In 2014 there was a proposal to change the name of the park to President Barack Obama Sandy Beach Park, but it was defeated.
