Rotunda of Xewkija, Gozo, Malta
The Rotunda of Xewkija, or the Church of St. John the Baptist, looks like a church from from the 17th century but it is only 40 years old.
There was a church on this site but it was dismantled when the new one was built. The best sculptures from that church were saved and now reside in the adjacent Sculpture Museum.
The reason there are so many nice sculptures is Malta and Gozo is the soft local limestone. Blocks are still mined on the island for construction jobs.
